I thought about the word "trust"--it also means that you rely on others. So that was my approach. The game turned out to be very different than what I had planned. I wanted to make a hommage to Game and Watch games (still visible in the player design) and I will definitely return and rewrite the project as a Game and Watch game. For the jam, I fell back to traditional jump and run controls. You have to go near you workers when they fall asleep (they wake up automatically). When enough parts have fallen into the middle, you can go there and press ctrl repeatedly to do your work. It is a very simple, small game that I could come up with in a short time. It was my first time with 2d lights and I really like them.
All the assets except for the title song ("Chiptune Factory" by FSV, opengameart.org) were done by me in the time span of the jam. No AI wrote code or drew any images--for better or worse. I hope you enjoy playing. I certainly enjoyed creating and finishing a project.
The name is a reference to an old Charlie Chaplin movie about modern work. I think that we are faced with some difficult choices in the workplace in the future. Chaplin had to adapt to the rhythm of the machines. When executives (not just in factories, but in other lines of work too!) decide that AI / robots can do the job without having to rely on humans, what will those humans do?
Note: I wanted to have it in a web-version, but in the last moment Unity's web player presented some problems that I could not solve before the end of the jam. So it's a downloadable and executable version instead.
New Note: I fixed it in the last minute. I had to set the color space in the Player tab of the project settings from Gamma to linear. Maybe this will help others who struggle with the same problem. The "Exit Game" button does not make any sense now of course. :-)
